3D printer hole sizes

By | August 17, 2024

This blog post with describe how I determine hole sizes for the flanged screws I use when assembling Jimmy Trains animations.

I use Bambu labs printers which are much faster than my 3D Ender printer. So a year and a half ago I switched to them exclusively for my products.

There is one downside to the printers though. They make oval holes in the vertical direction and too small of holes in the horizontal direction.

So I designed a test piece with several hole sizes from 1.8 mm to 2.8 mm. Then I print it horizontally and then I print it again vertically.

Horizontal print
Vertical print

I use this piece to test a 2.0, 2.3 and 2.6 mm flanged screws as well as the screws that come with servos. They are also 2.0 mm, but have a slightly different bite.

Below are my results.

Screw type (mm)Horizontal holeVertical hole
2.02.21.9
2.32.42.2
2.62.62.4
Servo 2.02.11.9
Hole sizes recommend for Bambu Labs printers

Happy animating!
